ADE – Amsterdam Dance Event, where do I even start?
This is going to serve as a recap of the first two days, day one got the better of me and left me unable to write anything whatsoever. I’ll give you a little bit more of an understanding as to why (and what happened) later on in this article. Amsterdam Dance Event is a 5 day festival with over 2,500 DJ’s and 350 events, so you can imagine this makes thing tough to decide on what to do. I think I am quite fortunate enough to have checked out a couple of insane events with acts that include Eelke Kleijne, Dave Seaman, Nicky Romero, Ryan Sullivan (representing SA), Armin Van Buuren, Max Cooper, POPOF, Bingo Players, Hector Couto and a host of others.
Arriving on Wednesday, I was literally dropped at my AirBNB home, knocked back a few shots of tequila and got ready to go out and check the town. The centre of Amsterdam has a wide variety of options, something for everyone, including the best munchies I have ever had. I quickly met up with the SA crew as well as Victor Ruiz and his lovely Any Mello, which took us straight to the Frisky Radio party with our very Ryan Sullivan playing. It was one of my highlights watching Ryan do his thing among the likes of Eelke and Dave Seaman. By this stage, my excitement was at an all-time high and Nicky Romero and friends was taking place at Melkweg, a club I have only heard incredible things about and holy shit – it’s all that and more, 4 dance floor club hosting up to 3 events a night. The place was packed to the brim and people were throwing some shapes I have never seen before, I was incredibly impressed, but now this is where things get interesting, Nicky Romero not only called out Armin Van Buuren to join him on stage but Afrojack too. There was some proper hard dance music being smashed out through the speakers, not your usual EDM bullshit which was just too good.
Here’s a funny story and the reason why no blog post went out yesterday but let’s just say I was very drunk at the close of the first night and my friends had my wallet and jacket (it’s very cold at the moment) & my cellphone was dead. I unfortunately got lost from the crew (no I wasn’t thrown out of Melkweg – promise) and after a big search for the crew, I threw in the towel & set off home on foot… I left the club at 5am and got home at midday, so you can imagine, I got to take in a large amount of Amsterdam’s scenery, which this is something that will never happen, well not by foot at least.
Thursday night was Max Cooper night for me, I got to experience Max like never before. His audio visual set up was like no other, his song selection was so on point you could see the joy in people’s eyes. His mixing was flawless and he had the crowd clapping and cheering with every mix he did, it was a surreal session I got to take in with a handful of others. I can genuinely say he’s one of the most talented artists I have ever come across in my life.
This lead us directly across the road to Sugar Factory where Hector Cuoto was getting the crowd going but what did it for me was seeing an act that Stroobz and I have followed closely for years now who goes by the name of Popof an my goodness gracious me, he was something else. If I could see him again, I would do it in a heartbeat. As you can imagine, my legs were extremely tired after my mini marathon walk home on Thursday morning that we decided to have an early one and came home around 6am to get some sleep for Friday and Saturday…
So, here I am signing off Amsterdam Dance Event Day 1 & 2 and I’m about to head through to the city centre, check out some coffee shops, find some more delicious munchies and take a stroll through the Red Light District, this is all in preparation for Richie Hawtin’s Enter Experience with the likes of Jon Gaiser, Matador, Julian Jeweil, Dubfire, Subb-An, Hot Since 82 and many more. Let’s just say we’re ending off the night at Ellum with a 2 hour closing set by Maceo Plex. Yip, Maceo Plex closing off our Friday night. Check out this Ellum line up and try not shit your pants (link) You’ll get a full feedback report tomorrow morning of what went down – Let’s just hope no one gets lost this time.
Thank you ADE for two incredible night’s so far, I am literally too excited for this weekend. Jeff Mills – I got my eye on you sir.
Highlight: Seeing Max Cooper capture a whole crowd with such a powerful live set.
Lowlight: Walking 25km home and praying for no rain. Only me!
