A local gin brand called ‘Muti Gin‘ recently beat 1500 contestants from 20 countries and took first place at the Dieline design awards in Chicago, USA. The brand is only one year’s old and was created by husband and wife, Jan and Kobá Solms from Stellenbosch. The Dieline design awards recognise and reward outstanding packaging and product design.
The citrus-styled gin includes a blend of Western and Eastern Cape fynbos, with the ghô-Kum and kusmalva plants as two of the main ingredients. The creators wanted the formulation as well as the bottle design for ‘Muti Gin‘ to be authentic and indigenous to South Africa.“We wanted to create medicine for the soul, hence the name,” the Solms told Business Insider SA.
Muti Gin’s simplistic yet striking aesthetic is all thanks to Jon Solms who used his experience as a local wine label designer to come up with the award-winning design for their brand. The Muti Gin label is sandblasted onto the bottle creating a rustic permanence. The ‘M’ symbolises Stellenbosch’s towering mountain peaks while the dots placed in symmetrical groupings, and sunray linework symbolizes beach sand and a sunset
And lastly, the left and right breaking waves on the design represent the famous “left and right breaking surf spots” of Elands Bay and Jeffreys Bay.
