This November, Cape Town will see the launch of a unique type of festival called Playtopia – a three-day indie gaming and playful media celebration taking place at the historical setting of The Castle.
The event will showcase local and international independent PC games, interactive and digital art and one helluva music line up! Festival attendees and gaming lovers can look forward to an immersive space dedicated to games, art and music complimented with a variety of food trucks and even a beer garden.
While only delegate tickets will get you into the exclusive talks, panels and workshops led by gaming and industry experts. Let’s take a closer look at some of the incredible talent making an appearance next month.
Lauren Beukes to our speaker line up! Praised by the likes of Stephen King, George RR Martin and the New York Times for her work. She is a novelist, filmmaker, comic book and animation writer. She’s the author of Zoo City, which won the Arthur C Clarke Award, and The Shining Girls.
Inka Kendzia will be bending light and minds with her magical projection art at Playtopia – Indie Games & Interactive Arts Festival!
Please welcome feminist icon Anita Sarkeesian(USA) to this year’s speaker line up! Creator of Feminist Frequency, a world renown commentary platform on how women are represented in pop culture and gaming. She has contributed to TED X, the UN, The Colbert Report and received the Ambassador Award for the 14th Game Developers Choice Awards. The impact she has had on women in gaming is seismic! Cukia “Sugar” Kimani
Cukia “Sugar” Kimani is a co-founder of Nyamakop, a game development studio based in Johannesburg. He is listed in Forbes Africa 30 under 30 of 2018. Nyamakop released their debut title, Semblance in 2018, the first African IP on the Nintendo platform ever! A very inspirational human!
Playtopia – Indie Games & Interactive Arts Festival will be hosting world renown embroiderer Danielle Clough who will be doing a thread based immersive installation. Best known for her stunning embroidered tennis rackets, her body of work has been featured on the likes of Netflix, This is Colossal, CNN, Vogue, Gucci and Adobe.
Ruan Rothmann works for Free Lives and is the lead developer for GORN and is one of the devs behind Broforce. He’ll be doing a talk about how a game goes from prototype to launch. Come to check out his talk at Playtopia – Indie Games & Interactive Arts Festival!

Bahiyya Khan is a multiple award-winning game designer and writer from Johannesburg. She’s won the Humble New Talent Award at A MAZE. / Berlin this year. Colin Payne began his career as a sculptor, painter and multimedia artist and creator. He now works in digital production design at Polymorph as a Director and at Sozo Labs in Extended Reality. In his spare time, he makes video games. He’ll be at Playtopia – Indie Games & Interactive Arts Festival doing a workshop called “No One Understands Me – Design Process for New Reality” come and check it out!
