The United States Food and Drug Administration has just approved the very first drug derived from marijuana. The medication is called Epidiolex and contains a compound found in Cannabis known as cannabidiol or CBD. The breakthrough drug will be used to help treat epilepsy and experts feel this leap forward will encourage and galvanize research into more marijuana based solutions and truly put the CBD market on the map.
The company went through three large-scale clinical trials before the FDA considered giving Epidiolex the official green light. The research provided strong evidence that this pharmaceutical-grade CBD had the power to significantly curb some of the worst symptoms of two of the hardest-to-treat forms of epilepsy, known as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
