A brief history of Origin Festival | 16 years of psychedelic music, visionary art and conscious culture

One of Cape Town’s longest-running and most anticipated annual trance gatherings, Origin Festival, celebrates its sweet sixteen this January/February and will take place once more at the home of Origin – Elandskloof Guest Farm in Helderstroom.

This beautiful venue – the abode of our favourite annual gathering of psychedelic music, visionary art and conscious culture – is quaintly tucked away between Villiersdorp and Greyton, just a short road trip from Cape Town. The lush green valley with its fresh mountain streams, welcoming forest and towering mountain backdrops will play host to the 16th annual Origin Festival, sound-tracked by the best Psychedelic beats from around the globe!

While Origin Festival has grown into South Africa’s longest-running premier trance festival – known for hosting mega lineups – the event has humble beginnings dating back all the way to 2004 when the very first party was hosted. As a young, upcoming festival, Origin went through its fair share of teething issues, from amateur sound and lighting to dealing with a festival-wide, flea-rash breakout which plagued all attendees during the year organisers moved the venue to Rainbow’s End.

By 2010, Origin Festival had solidified its place in the local scene and had fast become a ‘must-not-miss’ gathering for all trance enthusiasts and hosted Avalon as their international headliner that year. Not only was Origin Festival staring to book impressive international talent by this time, but they were also providing a phenomenal and important platform for young local artists such as Headroom, Regan, Broken Toy, and many more to showcase their talent to the country and the world. Origin also broke ground with their mind-bending video mapping when Afterlife came on board from 2015. Origin’s visuals have become known as some of the best mapping the local industry has seen to date.

But what truly set Origin Festival apart from competing gatherings was their growing and unshakable commitment to conscious culture. Over the year’s, the organisers have put a strong emphasis on respect for all and strengthening the global community based on conscious party ethics and respect for nature. “All communities are important to us and as such we are privileged to be able to offer a percentage of our profits every year to development projects under the guidance of the local municipality, ” says the organisers.

Other than 3-days of non-stop dancing, the festival also offers a variety of activities including, fresh river swimming, a chill zone, yoga, talks, exhibitions, luxury camping and more.  From humble beginnings to world-class lineups and productions, let’s take a look at Origin throughout the years – in motion picture!

2004 – 2007 Origin is Born

Origin Festival hosted their first trance party in 2004. Back then the venue’s included a quarry and Rainbow’s end before settling at the home of Origin in Helderstroom in 2011 -a venue which offers everything from shaded camping to amazing swimming facilities, incredible mountain views and the now popular, BEAT STAGE.

Initially, the stage setups were really close to the dancefloor, shade and décor were just a little less prominent, while the festival operated with outdated technical gear. Take a look at Origin’s annual growth with archive footage below.

Artists will be hosted across two main dance floors, The Origin Floor and The Beat Stage as well as on the Deep Chill Floor. The Origin Floor will be the amazing Psychedelic Temple for the festival, envisioned and built by world-leading dance floor creators and visionaries, Artscape and Afterlife. The Beat Stage, created by The Red Telephone will be set beneath the trees, on the lawn, alongside the river again where techno and deep house music meet.
