From October 29 to November 03, 2013 Johannesburg will be host to the Red Bull Music Academy for one of its infamous Bass Camps. Over the course of five days 30 participants from around the country will come together at the Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg to get a taste of what it’s like being a participant at the Red Bull Music Academy.
Three of the country’s most talented and esteemed producers, DJ Black Coffee, Culoe de Song and Julian Gomez have had the chance of getting mentored as participants by some of the most prolific names in music during previous Red Bull Music Academy editions. They will now share their experience and knowledge with the selected Bass Camp participants in lectures, studio sessions and live performance.
The participant’s days will be spent absorbing knowledge and breaking bread with some of South Africa’s music legends and pioneers followed by studio time in five high-end studios specially installed by the Red Bull Music Academy team. The final day’s program will include a lecture by the international DJ and production legend François K, who recently took part in the Red Bull Music Academy earlier this year in New York. This will be open to the public to experience it first hand.
After putting what they’ve learnt from the masters to good use in the studios, the participants’ nights will be spent performing and playing at club nights in venues around the city. A number of these RBMA Club Nights will happen throughout the week; including one at the Alex Theatre in Braamfontein on Saturday the 2nd of November with Francois K and other artists and the official closing party at Chaf Pozi in Soweto on Sunday the 3rd of November where various RBMA alumni will feature including Black Coffee, Jullian Gomes and the latest addition TranceMicSoul. Both events will be open to the public.
The Red Bull Music Academy, established in 1998, is a world-travelling series of music workshops and festivals. A unique forum for the artists who created the foundation of today’s musical landscape, as well as those who are busy formulating tomorrow’s most compelling movements. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the Academy traversed the metropolises of the globe making stops in Berlin, Cape Town, São Paulo, London, Toronto and most recently New York. Every year two groups of 30 selected participants ranching from producers, vocalists, DJs, instrumentalists and all-round musical mavericks from around the world come together in a new city for two weeks’ worth of recording sessions, lectures by musical luminaries and elating synergetic performances in popular local venues. The Red Bull Music Academy Bass Camp is a local spin- off of this international workshop series; a mini-Academy featuring all elements that make this experience all so special – lectures, studio sessions, live performances, and real-life bonding over mutual inspiration.
